What is an iris giclee’?

GoldDust_small.jpg (4407 bytes)

Gold Dust", 28"x18", Iris Giclee Canvas, 85s/n, $325

The Giclee print (pronounced zhee-clay), also known as Iris, is French for a spray of color.

According to EDC News, a publication of the EDC-CAD Netherlands, "The Louve in Paris uses the Iris 3047 printer and Lyson Fine Inks for the reproductions and display of works which cannot be allowed out of the museum’s cellars– works that would otherwise not be shown to the public."

In Museum lighting conditions (between 50 & 75 lux) a Giclee print with Lyson dyes will last over 100 years. In typical home or office lighting (up to 450 lux) Giclee prints will resist fading for 60 years.

The Giclee printer lays down 1,000,000 individual droplets of Lyson dyes per second. Each droplet is the size of a human red blood cell. The Image is printed on 100% rag paper or canvas.

Advances in the inks and dyes available to Iris Technology are already producing a rate of permanence comparable to cibachromes and superior to lithography, and a highly saturated and dynamic color range that is greater than serigraphy.

Leopard & The Lions" 23" x 46", Iris Giclee Canvas, 85s/n, $895

By using the best available archival inks and substrates, we are certain that we can meet the expectations of the most discriminating collector.

*New inks and dyes being developed are expected to extend the life of Giclee prints even more. And because they are biodegradable vegetable inks and dyes, they may help extend the life of the planet as well.

All Giclees are not created equal. The word Giclee was not in the Iris patent. There are high and low quality Giclees out. So ask about fading, life span, and 100% rag paper or canvas quality.

We believe in a quality product which the Iris Giclee provides and that is what we want to pass on to you.

Giclees offer us the ability to print a wider range of Stehen’s works , but, at the same time we will be able to keep the edition sizes smaller in number, hence adding to the exclusivity of each Giclee.

wpe18.jpg (1220 bytes)TO THE YUCATAN

We have released two new Iris Giclee canvas which are on the post cards included. "Leopard & The Lions" is of a family of lions with a leopard tortoise, 23 " x 46" on stretched canvas, s/n 85 edition size $895. "Gold Dust", is of two giraffes at sundown around a waterhole, 28" x 18" on stretched canvas, s/n 85 edition size, $325.
Where do you start? You have to know where to look. And our friends and guides, Mike and Linda Valencia, had the low down on the Yucatan. Yucatan, Mexico, located at the tip of Mexico, is an incredible place. From the clear blue beaches and lagoons to the thick mangroves and scrub to the awesome temples rich in history and deep jungles with beautiful tropical plants and flowers, the Yucatan is full of unique wildlife. We saw lots of intriguing reptiles including the adorable Basilisk Lizard, also called the Jesus Christ lizard because it stands up and runs on top of water.

Night frogging in the Yucatan. Geared up with head lights and all. Having a closer look at Bufo marinus (Marine Toad). Steve, Linda, & Mike.

We would listen for bird calls, follow the sound, then the bird would be right there. It was amazing. We got to the point where we could recognize calls and walk straight to the birds, birding by ear. We saw trogons, motmots, a royal-flycatcher, parrots, toucans, laughing falcons, bat falcons, a manakin, squirrel cuckoos, a montezuma oropendola, a shining honeycreeper, great kiskadees, a lovely cotinga, brown & whitethroated jays, orioles, red-throated & crowned tanagers, masked tityras, and many more.

On the last day in the bush, we got up early early and headed out on a 2 hour drive to reach our destination before sun rise. It was our third attempt at this remote pyramid where toucans where supposed to be. We sat at the top of the pyramid a couple of hours waiting ….being taunted by the parrots we could hear, but not see, for the fog. As the fog lifted, Necia saw a splash of color cross through the trees to the front of the pyramid. Then to our amazement five toucans flew into a tree next to the top of the pyramid. It was well worth the wait. Definitely a fruitful research trip. Until next time——–
