The red shouldered hawk prefers forested habitat to open spaces. In this painting the background is fairly insignificant, suggesting patches of light. The light breaking through the forest canopy and hitting the tree is important, the shadow the birds body is casting on the tree anchors it and deepens the painting. I really enjoyed painting this bird, the black markings and the rust colors, next to the various hues of green, nice.
