These massive guys look really docile in this pool of water. In reality they are deciding whether they should submerge or charge out and hopefully bluff us. Hippo actually hurt more people each year in Africa than any other critter, the reason, cases of wrong place wrong time! The bulls are very territorial, keeping a good eye on their harems, if a person unwittingly gets between the bull and his girls in a canoe or makoro, you just happen to be in the way while the bull hippo demolishes your canoe. The calls and bellows of hippo are such a parts of Africa it’s hard for me to think about it without remembering their sounds.
